Braxton Bragg was born and raised in Warrenton, North Carolina, graduated West Point in the class of 1837, and had already been known as a distinguished officer and leader during the Mexican-American War. When the war began, Bragg had already retired from the United States Army and was settled down as a plantation owner in Louisiana. The Civil war brought Bragg back into uniform
He became commander for the Confederate Army of Tennessee at the Battle of Chickamauga. His first post was in Florida, but when the confederacy needed more able-bodied commanders they brought him to Mississippi where he was observed by many as a skillful organizer and trainer. By midsummer, 1862, Braxton Bragg was promoted to full general and ranked as commander of the main Confederate army in the West, the Army of Mississippi, replacing P. G. T. Beauregard. This army was later renamed the Army of Tennessee.
He led this army into Kentucky, where he was defeated at the Battle of Perryville in October 1862. His then fought against Major General William Rosecrans along the banks of the Tennessee River. After being pushed out of Middle Tennessee and Chattanooga, Bragg defeated Rosecrans at the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863.
