Biography:
William L. Stoughton was born March 20, 1827 in Bangor, New York. He was a solider from the state of Michigan; he also practiced law in Michigan. When he joined the Union Army during the Civil War he was a general and brigade commander. He was the Colonel of the 11th Michigan and then was a Brigadier General. 

Stoughton commanded the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division of the XIV Corps of the Army of the Cumberland, during the battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga. He later was promoted to Major General but resigned in 1864 because of health reasons, and returned to Sturgis, Michigan to resume his law practice. 

In 1867 Stoughton was a member of the Michigan State Constitutional Convention and was the Michigan Attorney General from 1867-1868. He was later elected as a Republican in the 41st and 42nd Congresses in Michigan’s 2nd district. He served from March 1869 to March 1873. In 1874 he returned to his law practice in Sturgis, Michigan. William Stoughton died on June 6, 1888 in Sturgis, Michigan and is buried in a local cemetery there.
